What Goes in a Proper LED Workbox: A Complete Guide

When it comes to LED wall installations, having a well-stocked and organized workbox is essential for a smooth, efficient, and safe workflow.

LED Wall install

Whether you're setting up for a corporate event, a concert, or a permanent installation, the tools and equipment you bring can make or break the project. In this blog, we’ll go over everything you need to include in your LED workbox, from general tools to specialized calibration devices, ensuring you're ready for any situation that arises on-site.

General Tools

These are the essential tools that every LED technician should have at their disposal. They are versatile and used frequently for assembling, dismantling, and adjusting LED walls.

1. Multi-Tool (Leatherman or Similar)

A multi-tool is a must-have for quick fixes and minor adjustments. It typically includes pliers, knives, wire cutters, screwdrivers, and more.

2. Allen Wrenches (Metric)

Most LED panels are secured with Allen screws, so a full set of metric Allen wrenches is essential for assembling and adjusting the frames and panels.

3. Screwdrivers (Flathead/Phillips)

From mounting power supplies to adjusting brackets, screwdrivers are vital. Consider bringing a small electric screwdriver for speed and efficiency.

4. Small Electric Screwdriver

For quicker assembly and disassembly of panel sections, a small electric screwdriver with both flathead and Phillips attachments is ideal.

5. 19V Electric Screwdriver & Assorted Bits

A more powerful screwdriver helps drive screws into tougher materials or surfaces, especially during the heavy-duty assembly of mounting structures.

6. Measuring Tape (25ft & 100ft)

Accurate measurements are critical in LED installations. A 25-foot measuring tape works for most indoor setups, while a 100-foot tape is necessary for larger, outdoor installations.

7. Rubber Mallet

Useful for making slight adjustments to panel frames without damaging the components, a rubber mallet ensures gentle tapping where needed.

8. Crow Bar

Ideal for dismantling previous setups or making room for the new installation, a crowbar helps remove stubborn structures quickly.

9. Bubble Level & Laser Level (Green Laser 100' + On Tripod)

Precision is everything when installing LED walls. A bubble level helps ensure that your panels are perfectly straight, while a laser level (especially with a green laser for better visibility) can project across long distances, making alignment a breeze.

10. Magnetic Pickup Tool

Dropping screws or small metal parts during setup is inevitable. A magnetic pickup tool saves time and effort by retrieving them from hard-to-reach places.

11. Adjustable “C-Wrench”

A versatile wrench that adapts to various bolt sizes, useful for assembling trusses or frames quickly.

12. Side Cutters

Necessary for cutting cable ties, stripping wires, or trimming small materials, side cutters are a simple yet vital tool.

13. Ratchet Straps

Ratchet straps are essential for securing equipment during transport or holding heavy LED panel sections in place while installing.

14. Cat5E / Cat6 / Cat7 Crimpers

Many LED panels require network connections for signal transmission. A good pair of crimpers helps you create custom-length Ethernet cables on-site.

15. Safety Gloves

Protecting your hands is critical when handling heavy or sharp equipment. Make sure you have a durable pair of gloves.

16. Ratcheting Open Face Wrenches (Large)

These are essential for quickly securing bolts and fasteners on large trusses, structures, or frames.

Consumables

In any installation, you’ll need a variety of consumable items that support efficient and safe work.

1. Gaffers Tape

A go-to solution for temporarily securing cables and marking areas on stage, it leaves no residue and is easy to remove.

2. Electrical "E-Tape"

Electrical tape is vital for safely wrapping exposed wires or bundling cables together.

3. Cable Ties

Organizing and securing cables keeps your installation clean and safe. Stock a variety of lengths and strengths.

4. Wood Shims

Shims help level uneven surfaces, ensuring that LED panels sit straight and flush against any mounting surface.

5. Spare Bolts and Screws

Having extras on hand prevents delays caused by misplaced or missing hardware.

Adapters

Given the variety of video signals and networking needs in LED setups, a range of adapters and converters is crucial.

1. Laptop Dongles (Various)

A good set of dongles ensures your laptop can connect to any input/output device, from HDMI to DisplayPort or USB-C.

2. SDI to HDMI / HDMI to SDI Converters

These adapters ensure compatibility between different video signal formats, allowing you to work with various media servers and processors.

3. Ethernet Switch

An Ethernet switch is essential for connecting multiple devices, such as LED controllers and processors, to a central network.

4. Ethercon Barrels

Used for rugged, high-quality Ethernet connections, particularly in high-stress environments like concerts and events.

5. Cat5E / Cat6 / Cat7 Connectors

Keep a supply of connectors to create custom-length cables as needed.

Diagnostic Tools

Troubleshooting is an inevitable part of LED wall installations, and diagnostic tools help ensure smooth operation and quick problem resolution.

1. Circuit Tester

Checks for proper voltage in power sources, preventing equipment damage due to power issues.

2. Multimeter

Measures electrical properties like voltage, current, and resistance, crucial for diagnosing power issues.

3. RJ45 Cable Tester

Verifies that your network cables are functioning properly, ensuring smooth communication between LED panels and control systems.

4. Signal Analyzers

Ensures the quality of the video signal being sent to the LED wall, helping to catch any issues early.

5. Signal Generator

Outputs test signals for checking how well your LED wall processes input, especially during the final configuration phase.

6. Color Scope

Used for ensuring color consistency and calibration across all LED panels.

Programming & Calibrating Tools

These are the more specialized tools necessary for setting up and calibrating the LED display itself.

1. Laptop with Novastar / Brompton Software

The brain of your operation. This laptop will run the software needed to control and configure your LED processor and panels.

2. External Monitor

A second monitor provides more screen real estate when working with large programming environments, giving you space to monitor the content and make adjustments in real-time.

3. External Mouse/Mousepad

For better control and ease of navigation when using programming software.

4. Calibration Software

Software for fine-tuning the brightness, color, and uniformity of your LED panels.

5. Calibration Scope

A calibration scope (e.g., colorimeter or spectroradiometer) ensures that color accuracy and brightness are consistent across all panels.

6. Media Server / Content Management

The media server stores and distributes the content that will play on the LED wall, ensuring pixel mapping and real-time playback.

7. IP Cam or Marshall Spy Cameras

Helps monitor hard-to-see angles during installation, especially when aligning large or curved displays.

8. Extension Cords

You’ll need plenty of power on-site, and extension cords ensure you have enough reach to set up your tools and LED walls wherever necessary.

9. Surge Protectors

Protect your sensitive electronics from power surges during installation or operation.

10. Power Strips & Cube Taps

Expand the number of outlets available on-site for powering laptops, media servers, and LED processors.

Additional Tools to Consider

Torque Wrench: For ensuring bolts are tightened to the proper specification without overtightening, which is particularly important when dealing with delicate LED panels.

Heat Gun: Useful for applying heat shrink tubing over exposed wires and connections, ensuring long-lasting insulation.

Clamps: Essential for holding parts in place during assembly, particularly when working with curved or irregular surfaces.

A well-organized and complete LED workbox is the key to a successful installation, whether it’s a rental setup for a one-day event or a permanent installation in a corporate office. With the right tools at your disposal, you can be prepared for every challenge, ensuring efficiency, precision, and, most importantly, high-quality results. Make sure your workbox contains the tools and equipment mentioned above, and you’ll be well-equipped for any LED wall project.
